- Ethnic minorities now account for 8 per cent of UK citizens - 9 per cent in England
- Between 1991 and 2001 the number of non-white Britons grew by 53 per cent compared to just 1 per cent growth for the white population - this trend is expected to continue
- One in 10 of the ethnic population is over 55, compared to one in four of the white population
- Indians and Chinese are more likely than the white population to be in professional occupations
- 36 per cent of non-white business owners have a degree compared to 17 per cent for white business owners
- More than 70 per cent of the South Asian community live in homes with pay-TV compared with just over 50 per cent of the UK population as a whole
- 74 per cent of South Asians have a mobile phone compared with 69 per cent of the UK as a whole
- Statistics at the beginning of last year indicated that Asians are more likely to own a computer or DVD player and have access to the internet at home compared to the UK population as a whole
- The Institute of Practitioners in Advertising estimates that ethnic minorities have more disposable income than ever before, totalling at least £32billion.
